The new Google Pixel phones

The world of Google has always looked different from that of Apple. The search ad company has always handed their Android operating system to partners like Samsung and LG to let them do the hardware. As we are reading the tea leaves right now, that might change tomorrow.

Yes, we are going to do some horrible rumor mongering even though the release of the phones is tomorrow. Why? Because a Carphone Warehouse employee set the publication date of their Pixel page a day too early.

So what do we know? Well, just about anything except for the pricing.

The Pixel XL will have a 5.5″ QHD screen, a top of the line Qualcomm processor, and an option for 32 or 128 GB of storage. The Pixel will have a 5 inch Full HD screen, again a top of the line Qualcomm processor and again a choice of 32 or 128 GB of storage. Both phones will also feature that incredibly nice Amoled screen that your Samsung buddies are always showing off. (And for good reason)

Now that leaves us with an incredibly mundane phone launch tomorrow now does it? Yes and no. If you want a top of the line phone with a good camera, a fast processor and a good screen, any word in this sentence links you to a possible candidate.

But that is not the point of Google’s launch tomorrow. It seems that the ad giant is dropping the Nexus name, in favor of a bigger presence. Just rebranding it a Pixel isn’t the gist of it. Google barely mentions that these phones are made by HTC. They are branding it as if they, Google, made the phone. Yes, that is more or less the same tactic as Apple uses.

Google Pixel

Is that a good or a bad thing? Well as far as pricing goes, it most likely means that you end up paying a tad more than the Nexus phones of old. But that might also mean that Google will increase support for it’s phones and extend the life of your phone. One thing seems for certain though: poor old HTC will get none of the credit for making the new flagship device.

UPDATE 4/10:  Well that was some mundane launch. Google indeed went the full Apple and then some. They are branding ALL hardware as their own and starting a whole host of new product lines. If you want to see all of the Googly goodness then click play below:
