This Week in Geek: Free Game (!!)

Good news everyone! Humble Bundle celebrates it’s birthday and we are all getting a present: a free game. There is also a lot of hardware news to cover as Nintendo and Nvidia announced some (sort of) sad and happy news.

Nintendo has said that it would continue producing the Wii U but several news outlets have published articles that the gaming company will shutter its production lines fairly soon. This is not unexpected since the launch of the Switch also made clear that the U was not going live forever. This makes space for Nintendo to focus on the new console/tablet.

Speaking of the Switch… It turns out that even though the console/tablet hasn’t launched yet, it has driven the profit margin of Nvidia up a bit. The graphics giant earned a record revenue of 2 billion dollars last quarter. That is not that surprising considering that the company launched a whole slew of new graphics cards. But the mobile division is doing nicely as well, thanks to the Switch.

gtx1060Oneplus has more or less confirmed that it’s flagship phone, the Oneplus 3, will soon be replaced by an upgraded version. The Oneplus 3T will feature a new camera, an upgraded processor and a slightly higher price. This would be a new move by the Chinese company as they focus on just one phone each year, rather than every six months. All this information is still nothing more than rumors but the steady stream of incremental leaks suggests that this is really happening.

In other hardware news, pretty much all from Friday, a company called TPCAST launched an add-on to the HTC Vive that makes it wireless. This was one of the biggest complaints about the Vive. The upgrade kit will set you back a pretty penny with a MSRP of around 250 dollars. The press release only states the Chinese price though and mentions nothing about international availability.

Movies & Series

We’re getting closer and closer to the release of Star Wars: Rogue One. And before you ask: yes, I like Star Wars and yes, I like Rogue One. Well, as far as trailers can make you like a movie. And that is what I wanted to let you watch. The new trailer that was released this week. (Bundle Stars has a Star Wars weekend, by the way)

And may I once again remind you to watch Designated Survivor on Netflix?

After last weekends big esports extravaganza at Blizzcon this weekend may seem like a bit of a letdown. But there is a nice CS:GO tournament going on in Costa Mesa. That is not all, there is a slew of WESG qualifier matches this weekend. You can enjoy some competitive CS:GO and Starcraft 2. There are also some Hearthstone matches to watch in the Celestial Invitational NSL HS Masters. And for those people interested in some competitive Overwatch, you can enjoy some matches in the Chinese Pioneer Cup during Saturday and Sunday.

There is another sale on! I’ve mentioned that Humble Bundle is celebrating it’s birthday with free games. Or at least one free game. You can get Dirt 3 complete edition, without paying a dime.

This is not the only thing, they are holding a weeklong sale as well. It features a rather nice ‘build you own’ bundle from Activision, Square Enix and Sega for your gaming pleasure. Be sure to claim your free game first though. Supplies are limited.
